Once it's formatted Windows will assign a drive letter to it and you'll be able to see it in the top portion of Disk Management as well as in Windows Explorer. - By that, I mean that in order for your eSATA drive to be recognized by turning it on after Windows is already running (hot-switching), your controller needs to be in AHCI
- if you want to switch to AHCI mode after windows is installed there are some manual configurations to be made inside windows for this to work.
- The hard drive on an esata cable is not showing up under disc management or the device manager, and I've tried restarting my computer a few times.

- As in the post above, I tried another eSata cable and it was just a tiny bit longer and made a full connection in the Syno.
- Mine shows "IDE:Seagate FreeAgen" as one of the choices, even though that drive is not bootable.

solved external hdd not showing up and causes windows 7 to be unresponsive. Have you checked if the BIOS can see the eSATA drive? Not in IDE and not in ACHI. Instructions say to connect it to any of the SATA ports on the mobo.

Also try replacing your eSATA cable. I've been doing it the other way around though, from an internal SATA port to an eSATA drive enclosure (it's a regular internal HDD inside that enclosure though). BUT a simple adapter plate that converts a SATA port to an eSATA connector leaves you totally dependent on the capabilities of the SATA controller.
If you do, If it is a new drive, it will have to be initialized, a simple partition created, formatted and a drive letter assigned.
