By default, when you wrap text within a cell, Excel automatically adjusts row height so that all the text in the cell is visible. basically they broke it. As for your theory that there is an extra character, you may be right, but I certainly didn't type one, and I wouldn't know how to get rid of it. It can be a bit tricky to get the mouse pointer in the correct location to do the double-clicking, so an approach I prefer is to select the row and simply I realised that I was trying to auto-fit a merged cell (columns C & D were merged) & hence this turned out to be the cause.
