I guess there is a bug in ubuntu which not letting ubuntu read any CD and DVD when we insert them. UPDATE: Since Medibuntu is no longer available, you have to install libdvdcss2 repository manually. Thanks for reminded me of this. Source Thank you.

install libdvdnav/read blah blah …. I tried other disks - still no play on 12.04 - this was a fresh install from a recent download. That is if you have followed the instructions in this blog, so you have dvdread4 installed AND runned the kommand to install the decryption program. To install it, open Ubuntu Software Center and search for and install the package libdvdread4 and libdvdnav4. I chose to cancel and didn't choose VLC or anything else. I hope that after completing all these steps, you would be able to play DVD in Ubuntu 14.04 (as well as in Linux Mint 17).
